Three Products, Three Different Jobs

Ceramic coating applied to a vehicle in Lawrence, Kansas

Ceramic coating

Years, not weeks

Walk into any detailing conversation and you'll hear these three names used almost interchangeably. They aren't interchangeable. Two are appearance products; one is a durability product. Knowing which problem you're trying to solve is the whole decision.

01

Wax

Wax is the oldest form of paint protection and still the warmest-looking one. A quality carnauba wax deepens the colour and takes about an hour to apply. What it doesn't do is last: expect four to eight weeks before it's gone, and less than that through a Kansas summer sitting in the sun.

Included in SKW’s Premium Exterior Detail, from $130.

Best for
Show cars, weekend vehicles, and anyone who genuinely enjoys waxing their car.

02

Sealant

A paint sealant is a synthetic polymer that sits between wax and ceramic. It's slicker than wax, more resistant to heat and detergents, and lasts three to six months. Applied by hand, it costs about the same as a wax and is the easiest way to step up from one.

Not offered as a separate service at SKW.

Best for
Leased cars, older paint, and owners who want protection without a long commitment.

Ceramic Coating vs. Wax and Sealant

These three get talked about as if they compete. They don't — they solve different problems. Here's the honest version.

Worth saying plainly: a ceramic coating is a chemical layer, not a physical shield. It won't stop a rock chip. What it does is make everything else easier to live with.

There isn't one. They solve different problems: wax and sealant are appearance and light protection, ceramic coating is durability and easy cleaning. The right answer depends on how long you plan to keep the car and how much upkeep you actually want to do.
